Holi is one of the most joyful Hindu festivals - the festival of colours. It is celebrated every spring, usually in March, on the full moon day. It marks the end of winter and the start of the warm growing season.

The Story of Holika and Prahlad

Holi remembers the story of Prahlad, a young boy who was a faithful devotee of Vishnu. His father was an evil king who wanted to be worshipped as a god, and he was furious that his son loved Vishnu instead. The king's sister Holika had a magical cloak that protected her from fire. She tricked Prahlad into sitting with her in a bonfire. But Vishnu protected Prahlad, and the cloak flew off Holika and onto Prahlad - so Holika was burned and Prahlad was saved.

How Holi is Celebrated

On the first night, bonfires are lit to remember Holika.
The next day, people throw coloured powders (gulal) and water at each other in the streets.
Friends, family and strangers all join in - it is a moment when normal rules are relaxed.
People share sweets such as gujiya.

Holi also has a link with the avatar Krishna, who is said to have played with coloured powders with his cowherd friends. For Hindus, Holi is a celebration of good defeating evil, of friendship, and of the new season.
