Moksha (Sanskrit for "release") is the highest goal of Hindu life. While Hindus may pray for good health, wealth or a good next life, moksha is the deepest goal of all: liberation from samsara, the cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

At moksha:

The atman stops being reborn.
It is no longer trapped by karma.
It is reunited with Brahman - the drop returning to the ocean.

Three Paths to Moksha

Hindus believe that different people are suited to different ways of reaching moksha. The Bhagavad Gita describes three main yogas (paths):

Jnana yoga - the path of knowledge. Studying the scriptures and meditation to understand the true nature of atman and Brahman.
Bhakti yoga - the path of devotion. Loving worship of a personal god such as Krishna, Vishnu or Shiva. This is the most popular path today.
Karma yoga - the path of action. Doing your duty selflessly, without attachment to the results.

Some Hindus believe moksha can only be reached in a human life - which is why being born human is considered such a rare and precious chance. For most Hindus, reaching moksha takes many lifetimes of preparation.
